Hobby Barn is a complex renovation of a historic Hiram Halle home that was originally built in 1880. The architectural team transformed the existing home into a beautiful modern barn while simultaneously satisfying the town’s strict historic, board, wetlands commission, and planning board guidelines. The public side design reflects the historic character, reusing the original Hiram Halle windows in the new façade. The rear elevation features modernist ribbons of glass, emphasizing the bucolic Westchester landscape beyond. Traditional barn materials such as steel, timber, and stone are playfully incorporated as modern details and expressed in the industrial aesthetic of the glass and steel floating staircase. Sliding barn doors on exposed steel tracks further emphasize the industrial barn motif and echo the home’s origins.
